.

What Is Spinal Decompression?

Spinal decompression or back decompression is a non-surgical procedure used to reduce back and leg pain. This treatment uses a traction table or manual adjustments to stretch the spine and relieve pinched nerves. Additionally, spinal decompression may help return bulging discs to their correct alignment.

Decompression and traction create a healing environment for a herniated disc that results in pain. Our chiropractor uses decompression to relieve pressure on the disc. This enables the bulging discs to return to their original position and allows nutrients to reach the injured areas.

How Does Chiropractic Decompression Work?

Our chiropractor, Dr. Sean Billings, uses a traction table to stretch and relax your spine. This process creates intervals of space to allow your herniated or bulging disc to fall back into alignment.

During lumbar spine decompression therapy, the chiropractor asks you to lay face down and places a harness around your hips. The harness attaches to the end of the table which slides to relax your spine and create new space. In some cases, you may lie face-up during the procedure. Dr. Billings will walk you through the procedure that is right for your condition prior to beginning.

What to Expect from Spinal Decompression

Spinal decompression typically takes less than 45 minutes and you may need from 15 to 30 treatments, depending on the severity of your symptoms. This varies from person to person and may take up to six weeks to complete.

Dr. Billings may apply additional chiropractic therapies such as hot/cold therapy, ultrasound, or electric stimulation. Please check directly with your insurance provider to see if they cover traction therapy.

What Precautions Should You Take?

Drink extra water prior to and during the treatment to ensure hydration. Get plenty of rest to help ensure optimal outcomes. The chiropractor may counsel you on effective nutritional supplements and provide exercises to do at home to complement your therapy.

Good Candidates for Spinal Decompression

If you have sciatica, neck pain, or back pain, spinal decompression may help reduce your discomfort. The process also may alleviate painful herniated or bulging discs.
